For this title, Scholastic wanted a longer story for this grade level, and my recollection was that I had free reign. Obviously I was going to write something scary and/or weird. I loved playing with the mind-bending “twist” at the end, and there’s a real Quatermass 2 vibe going on in this story about the grisliest subterfuge plot I could safely come up with in an educational format. (Bonus points if you actually know what Quatermass 2 is.)
